Hip arthritis can turn walking, putting on your shoes or sleeping on your side into a daily struggle. A hip replacement is one of the most successful surgeries in medicine, and most patients walk the day after surgery.

What is a hip replacement?

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In a hip replacement, the worn ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) are replaced with implants that recreate a smooth, stable joint.

It’s mainly used for osteoarthritis, but also for avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia and some fractures.

Signs it may be time

Hip pain is sometimes caused by the lower back. Dr. Zarur will confirm where the pain really comes from before recommending surgery.

Your options

Non-surgical treatment

Physical therapy, weight control, medication and injections can relieve pain in early stages.

Total hip replacement

Both the ball and the socket are replaced. The standard option for advanced arthritis, with long-lasting results.

Hip arthroscopy

Minimally invasive surgery for labral tears and impingement in younger, active patients without advanced arthritis.

Partial replacement (hemiarthroplasty)

Only the ball is replaced. Used mainly for certain hip fractures in older patients.

How Dr. Zarur performs the surgery

The surgery is planned with your X-rays to restore the length of your leg and the natural mechanics of your hip. A well-positioned implant means a more stable hip and a lower risk of dislocation.

You start walking with support the same day or the day after surgery.
