ACL Surgery Recovery Time: A Week-by-Week Guide

An ACL tear is one of the most feared injuries in sport, and the first question most patients ask is simple: how long until I’m back? The honest answer is that full recovery takes months, but every week has a clear goal. Here is the typical timeline Dr. Zarur follows with his patients.

Before surgery: prepare the knee

The best recoveries start before the operation. Reducing swelling and recovering full knee extension with physical therapy makes the first weeks after surgery much easier.

Weeks 1 to 2: protect and activate

  • Walking with crutches and a brace
  • Controlling pain and swelling with ice, elevation and medication
  • Gentle exercises to wake up the quadriceps

Weeks 3 to 6: walk normally again

Most patients leave the crutches behind, recover full range of motion and start building strength with cycling and controlled exercises.

Months 3 to 5: running and sport drills

Once strength and stability are good enough, you can start light jogging and sport-specific movements under supervision.

Months 6 to 9: return to play

Returning to competition is not just a date on the calendar. Before you go back, Dr. Zarur checks strength, balance and jumping tests to lower the risk of a new injury.

What speeds up recovery?

  • Starting rehab early and being consistent
  • A good surgical technique and graft choice
  • Sleep, nutrition and patience in the final phase

Every case is different. Your exact timeline depends on your injury, your sport and your rehab. Dr. Zarur will give you a personalized plan.
